Ryan Ready To Roll

Posted on: Sat 07 Aug 2010

Ryan Dickson says he impressed with the quality in the Saints squad ahead of the visit of his former club Plymouth on Saturday.

The summer arrival from Brentford grew up in Devon and harnessed his game at Argyle before making the switch to Griffin Park.

"I was there (at Plymouth) from the age of nine until about 20 when I left and it's obviously changed around a lot since I was there," he told Saints Player

"And this is a massive difference from Brentford. Everything is set in place here a great stadium, incredible training facilities so as a player you can't really argue with that.

"When a team like Southampton comes knocking, it's one of those offers that you can't really turn down. Some very good players have come through this football club, young players are developed here and we've got great coaches and facilities which can only help me to become a better player.

"We're full of good players here now. When I first arrived I was very impressed with Morgan Schneiderlin, Adam Lallana and Jason Puncheon, then there's obviously Rickie's goal record which is incredible. You could probably go through the whole team to be fair, as they're all very good footballers."

Ryan hopes that he will add even more quality to the squad, as well as some knowhow of what it takes to get to where Saints want to be at the end of the season.

"The club is being run fantastically well at the moment so everything is set up in place for us to progress and move up the table.

"I want to play as many games as I can, impress and see how it goes. I just want to play and do as well as I possibly can for Southampton.

"You normally go to football clubs and there's no left sided players, so we've got a bit of a luxury here with so many left footers. I don't expect to be playing, but I'm going to work as hard as I can to get into the team.

"As a squad we'd like to make a big impact, but it's not always as black and white as that, so hopefully we'll just take it game by game and see what happens.

"It's a hard league to get out of, and teams make it hard for you by setting up camp so we're going to have find ways to break them down. There are some well drilled sides in this league, Dagenham are a surprise package, but I've played against them in League Two and I know that they will be a tough side to beat. Teams like that are well drilled and organised, so it won't be easy."

Dickson concluded that Saturday's game live in front of the television cameras will be the perfect example of what to expect each week as expectation levels rise at St. Mary's.

"Plymouth are going to be up for it because they'll come here to Southampton which is a big football club, and it's on television so it's a big game for them.

"They're also a big, physical side from what I've heard so it should be a tough game, but hopefully one that we can win."
