Lambert Looking For Run

Posted on: Tue 31 Jan 2012

Rickie Lambert is hoping that Saturday's result at The Den will be the starting point of another wave of momentum for the team.

The striker, who returned from a three match suspension to score Saints' goal in the 1-1 draw admitted that it was a big relief to be playing again and being back alongside a number of returning players.

"It's been a frustrating few weeks so to come back to get on the score sheet is excellent and it was a great feeling," he told Saints Player.

"I wanted to play. I didn't ask the gaffer to, and if he had wanted to rest me to play on Tuesday then I would have done that and respected it, but he put me in the starting line up today and I'm happy that I've got 90 minutes under my belt.

"It was a very hard game. I'm very, very tired and the lads are too - we know we've been in a game and I think a few of their players were blowing a bit as well, so it wasn't the prettiest to look at or like the football we've been used to this season, but it was a good dogged display and just disappointing that they scored in the last five minutes.

"It does feel a bit like a defeat and I think it was a bit harsh on us. Coming to Millwall 1-1 and almost getting a victory is a god result but we're obviously disappointed at being five minutes away from a win.

"We've got to take positives from this game though, because it's very hard to come here and get away with anything."

Lambert lined up alongside Lee Barnard from the start of the game for the first time this season, and the top scorer was pleased to see one of his strike partners back in the side.

"He's had a frustrating season and I was made up more than anyone to see Barney back on the pitch. He didn't get a goal but it will give him a lot of confidence and by playing 60-70 minutes he can hopefully take that into the rest of the season now.

"The more you play with a set of players the more fluid everything is. There have been a lot of injuries and suspensions etc. which is what happens to every team, it's just that we've had to deal with it in the last month and thankfully everyone is back now.

"Hopefully we can get on a steady run now and start picking up more points in the league."

Rickie has now set his sights on returning to league action in the game against Cardiff City at the top of the Championship on Tuesday night, and believes Saints will take confidence into the contest.

"Just like Leicester the other day it's nice to get that performance out of our system and I think we put in a good display (at Millwall).

"We played very well at Cardiff and hopefully we can play the same against them again but turn the result around this time.

"The further the season goes the more important it gets. It's brilliant as it's another game, but it's a home game, we've got a big squad so we'll be able to cope with it and I'm looking forward to every game especially this one on Tuesday."
