Duo Nominated For Championship Prize

Posted on: Sun 26 Feb 2012

Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana are on a three man shortlist for the division's Player of the Year.

Rickie and Adam have earned recognition from managers up and down the country for their superb form which has helped Saints challenge for promotion this season.

The duo who have each previously been selected in the League One Team of the Year have both stepped up admirably to life in the second tier, and are set to enjoy another evening at the Football League's Awards ceremony this year.

Adam Lallana said:

"It's obviously nice to get recognised but we just want to achieve promotion now because that's our main goal for the season. If we get promoted then it'll be brilliant.

"We're not far past the halfway stage of the season so it does feel a bit strange to have awards now, but then the season finishes in April which will be here before we know it.

"There were five of us in the 'Team of the Year' last season and it shows that the individuals as well as the team are doing well and the more that individuals play well, the more success we'll have as a team.

"Rickie has been fantastic for us all season with 20 odd goals for us, but it's not just about what one or two of us do it's about the team, and we've had some outstanding performances throughout the team all season so it's credit to the team and how well we've done this season.

"It would be nice to win it, but I'd prefer to outshine it with a nice Championship Winner's medal at the end of the season."

Rickie Lambert commented:

"It's a great, great honour to be nominated. For the managers to pick me is nice to know and it's amazing that two out of three nominees are from this team, so I think that's full credit to what we're doing here at Southampton.

"I'm very proud. I've spent most of my time in League One so to finally get out of League One and be recognised like this in the first season means I'm really happy.

"Adam's been awesome this season again and he was amazing last season too. He's picked up again and in the last few weeks he's been superb. I said to him after the game at the weekend that it's a pleasure to watch him sometimes, and I'm playing in the same team as him which is brilliant.

"It's nice when your team gets recognised and to get two players into this category is a big achievement and I can only thank those who have picked us."
