Saints finally secured the signature of Tunisian defender Radhi Jaidi on the last day of the 2009 summer transfer window.
Manager Alan Pardew had already set his sights on the 34 year old, but appeared to have been forced to rethink his plans due to work permit red tape.
The Tunisian national team captain was was out of contract after being released by Premier League new boys Birmingham City over the summer and penned a two year deal at St. Mary's.
Jaidi was signed for £2 million by the Blues in 2006 as they looked to get back into the Premier League at the first attempt.
Having previously played in the top-flight with Bolton Wanderers, he joined Birmingham in the Championship and played 38 games during his first season at St. Andrew's as Steve Bruce's side won automatic promotion.
Outside of England, Jaidi has played for just one team, Esperance Sportive de Tunis, where he began his professional career in 1993, before becoming the first Tunisian to arrive in the Premier League.
Jaidi has firmly established himself on the international scene and has played for his country in the last two World Cups, scoring in Tunisia's 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia at Munich's Allianz Arena in 2006.
He was also a key part of side the lifted the 2004 African Cup of Nations, which was hosted by the Tunisians themselves.
A powerful and experienced defender, at almost 6'3'', he will also bring additional height and strength to the Saints backline.
