Originally a central midfielder, Lloyd has adapted to a number of positions including centre-half but since his rise into the first team, he has become an accomplished right back where his strength and energy make him a useful option.
A great ball-winner and strong in possession too, the positional discipline required to make the switch to the back means he is an excellent option for the holding role as well, where he excelled during his time with the Saints Academy.
James featured frequently for the Reserves and made his first in-roads to the first team when he joined the squad for an FA Cup tie against Torquay United in January 2007.
He became a regular member of Saints' first team in 2008/09 where Dutchman Jan Poortvliet gave him his debut. The Bristol-born full-back went on to feature regularly throughout the campaign.
On the international stage, he has continued to represent his country at Under 21 level, having previously been involved in the Welsh Under 16, 17 and 19 squads.
Lloyd captained the side for the first time during a pre-season friendly against Cheltenham Town in July 2009, when caretaker manager Stewart Henderson deployed him in his old midfield role.
