A prolific start to his career at Bournemouth meant that a number of clubs showed an interest in Saints' young striker before he chose St. Mary's as the place to sign his scholarship forms.
Now in his second year as a scholar, Paterson is a natural goal-scorer with physical presence and good ability on the ball, offering a different type of forward play to those strikers already on the Academy's books.
In the 2005-06 season he was also part of the same Hampshire team as Michael Byrne that were knocked out in the semi-finals of a national cup competition by Jamie Hatch's Devon team.
Paterson made his full debut for Saints in a 1-1 home draw in the Championship against Reading. He then went on to start against Manchester United in the 3rd round of the F.A Cup but was sent off for a foul on Nemanja Vidic which curtailed his involvement for the next three games.
