Aaron Martin joined Saints from neighbours Eastleigh on an initial 18 month contract in November 2009 a month after his 20th birthday.
The centre-back, is a graduate of the Spitfires' youth system having twice had unsuccessful trials with Saints at Under 12s level. Having established himself in the Eastleigh side a few years later, former Saint Ian Baird recommended him to try his luck again at the club in October 2009.
During this trial spell he impressed in the reserves' 1-1 draw at Plymouth Argyle, completing the full 90 minutes in front of on-looking Saints first team management. He would later go on to make his full first team debut at Gillingham which he followed up with another start in the final game of the season against Southend United.
Martin measures in at over 6 feet tall and is a former student at nearby Itchen College, during which time he represented the England schoolboys side.
He models his game on England defender John Terry's style, and has already had the backing from his peers to reach the same level at the Chelsea captain.
Ahead of the 2011/12 campaign, Martin signed a new three year deal with the club having played a key role for the Under-21 side under Martin Hunter in addition to a handful of first team appearances, clearly impressing the new management.
Martin held an extended run in the team at the turn of 2012 with the team sitting top of the Championship table, and he headed home his first professional goal for the club with a late winner in the 2-1 FA Cup success at Coventry City.
